Description

I never played American McGee's Alice, remembered seeing the game at the turn of the century was kinda intrigued but didn't get it since I didn't use, and still don't really use, my pc to play games. Still a few of my friends filled me in and it's a good twist on Lewis Carroll's original Alice stories and is A. McGee's best...and ONLY best...video game.

...I'm still doing my best to forget Bad Day in LA...

Naturally what interested me in Alice the first time out was learning that that she had been committed into an asylum. Unfortunately at the time they probably couldn't spend much on highly active fmv sequences so they used the excuse of the older Alice becoming comatose during her stay. Too bad, I would have been more interested in it if the opening sequence had played out in a way that obviously would have gotten me to purchase the game...

The first game is still worth getting for Windows if you can find a reasonably priced used copy and have an old enough version of Windows. Here's a guide.

32-bit Windows Vista or 7 on 32-bit processors -- ideal

32-bit Windows Vista or 7 on 64-bit processors -- works fine at 640x480 resolution

64-bit Windows 7 on 64-bit processors -- runs like a drunken slug with extreme frame-dropping when boojums are on the screen

Make sure to enable the "maintain aspect ratio" setting for your graphics card. For laptops with ATI graphics cards, you can find that in the mobility settings in the Catalyst Control Center. I've never had an Nvidia card and don't know where to look. AMA will play on Intel Integrated Cards with 32-bit Windows 7 on 64-bit processors, but performance was sluggish even at 640x480.

Warning to those who have the "No-CD Patch." Install this on Windows Vista and you may lose sound system-wide. The "No-CD Patch" is compatible only with XP and 7. Unless you're using a netbook with no optical drive, I'd recommend using the original binary and putting the disk #2 in the drive.
